Jason Wells began performing in Cincinnati, OH around the year 2000 as an acoustic singer/songwriter. As time passed he began to acquire some folks to back him up on a few songs during his live performances. Eventually he began writing certain songs with a band in mind and decided that he would go under the name "for algernon".  He recorded the albums Orange Watches & Lost Loves and The Lost Days of Captain Johnny Sinclair in his attic studio by himself.
In December of 2004 for algernon assembled a full time line-up consisting of Jeremy Strickland (bass), Darin Strachan (lap steel, etc), Jeff Perholtz (lead guitar, vocals), Eric Tepe (trumpet) and Tim Seiwert (drums). However, the line-up is always growing with sit in vocalsits, horn and string players.

In 2005 for algernon  released the new album "the lost days of captain johnny sinclair" on Vibrating Needle, they played the Jammin' On Music Festival in May, were asked by The Cincinnati Film Society to compose and perform a live film score in the Cincinnati Art Museum and were invited to play the Midpoint Music Festival.  At the start of 2006, they began work on their 3rd full length recording with a scheduled winter release on The Vibrating Needle Recording Collective.
